Pearl Izumi Run Like An Animal 10
Hi There,
Did the Pearl Izumi Run Like An Animal 10k on Saturday out in Firhouse. Small amount of people there approx 200. I think there were a lot of no shows which was a pity because it was the first of these races and because even though it was torential just before the race it was nice cool conditions for the race and just a bit of drizzle! Its my second event - completed it in 53mins which I was happy enough with as a beginner.
Thanks to the organisers, its a nice event, and a lovely course for beginner runners. Lets hope for next year they get a better turn out.
Good for you D. That was a super time for a beginner. I won't be hot on your heels anyway. What was your first event and what will be your next?
Hi There Scooby,
My first event was the Frank Duffy 10 mile which i did in an 1 hour 34, I was delighted. Started training in June short runs and just built it up, really pleased with the progress. I think having races to work towards is the best motivator though.
My next event is the half marathon in Phoenix park, I am nervous about it because I have not been training as much as possible - had a bad chest cold etc. Anyway back on the horse after last weekend and dong a loop around where I live which is about 7.2 miles each night. I hope this will prepare me enough for satruday week!
I am not sure how to work my training next week - the week of events are a bit tricky getting the balance between rest and training. Any advice? Have you been participating in any events?
I'm a beginner too but am much slower. Managed the Achill and Longford Half Maras and am going to give the Dublin one a go seeing as I will be in the city for the weekend. Am going to take my time as advised and aim for a full in Spring if I can find one to go for. Do you ride the 7 miles or run them??
Wow that is pretty impressive, the Dublin half will be my first. The horse was just a turn of phrase! I run the 7 miles! I live in Beaumont so I have a nice loop around by the coast road up by Raheny which is a good run.
Best of luck with the Dublin one, I want to enjoy the experience so I think next year I hope to be seasoned enough to make it around running :-) best of luck with the next race in Dublin.
Might get to see you in Dublin. I hope to God I don't get lost trying to find the right gate to come in to the Park.I won't be able to collect my pack until , before I started running , so I hope I have enough time,
I had to stay near the Bull Wall last year and wished I was a runner then cos I thought it would be gorgeous to run along the seafront on the flat. Best of luck anyway, and Im sure you will manage it fine.
Hi Scooby, if you enter the park from the City side entrance "Park Gate St" you just go all the way up chesterfield avenue and exit there, no turns, just straight up and then the Race series is signposted from there.
Get there before 9 though, just so you can get up the road, they close it off shortly after I think.
Cheers

Oh God Thanks a million for that Fat boy. I know that one. I have to go early to get my pack anyway. Is this a tough half? Am getting a bit nervous...
That you Alan? Good for you. You must be delighted to finish the full. That your first or just your first in your thirties?
Was it a nice course? It looks hot there
Hi Scooby, thats me in the you tube alright. That was my 2nd marathon, did Dublin last year aswell. Stockholm was hot hot hot and it makes a big difference! Beautiful city though!!!
The half in Phoenix park is a nice course, it's where I do my long runs at weekends. On the course there are 2 hills, nothing mega but 2nd time around you tend to feel them a bit more. First is at the Magazine fort which is around mile 4 (i think) and second is the upper glen road around 1.5 mile later, this one is slighlty longer.
But, they arent mountains and they are brilliant training for the marathon! Infact, most weekends you see people running the opposite direction which I think is a little tougher, ya know what that means.... what goes up must come down :-)
As for the nerves on Saturday... everyone has their own ritual, my advice (im only running 1 year so i dont claim to know alot) is just do everything as you do when you normally run. Morning prep included, eat at the same time, use the loo (this sounds horrible but wait till you see the Q), Stay relaxed and take in the athmosphere, smile and chat with a few people!
Dont start running any faster than you normally do, it's easy to do when your in a large crowd, i always stay close to the back of the pack because if your up front or even middle, you are surrounded mostly by faster runners and your forced to run faster, which just means your going to get tired faster.
The announcer at the last race said something which i really liked "it's not the distance that will get you, it's the speed" very true, becasue you could go out today and walk a marathon, slow as you like but you couldnt run it...moral being, go faster last less.
Another nugget that helps me came from a book i read recently titled "What I talk about when I talk about running" and he says that pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. It's a state of mind :-0
Best of luck Saturday!!! Have fun...
Peace

Thats great wisdom surely about speed and distance etc. Im a slow plodder though and don't get carried away too easily ,luckily enough.
I rarely run in the mornings so I hate these early starts .lol I start trying to hydrate as early as I can but my bladder doesnt really appreciate that it needs to be empty before I take off!
I am lookoing forward to running in the park with no jumping into the ditches to avoid being hit by cars or tractors, and not having a camber on the side of the road which nearly requires an abseiling harness.
You doing Dublin again this year or what lies ahead of you in your running ambitions?
HI There,
Best of luck tomorrow in the half - I will be there! And I am t aking all of your advice above, I have just finished that book 'what I talk about when I talk about running' and I found it really interesting.. I also will be thinking about something he says in the book about marathons...he has 3 priorities in this order when running a marathon... keep running, cross the finish line, and enjoy yourself.
Denise

Hi There, Scooby and Fat Boy,
I was all set to go and something came up at home and I had to go down the country on Saturday. I was so sad, posted my timing chip back yesterday. Well done to you both, it was such an amazing day, compared with the day of the Frank Duffy 10 mile, I am sure the atmosphere after it was great. I was in college on Monday night and one of the people in my class was running behind the guy who collapsed and helped him out, did not get more details than that though.
So like you scooby I am looking for another half marathon to focus my mind, though I hope to do the 10 k in Clondalkin on Sunday!
Just have to get back into it now - keep on runnin...:-)
Denise
Hi Alan
I came in at the zoo end and had to park near there and walk up to the college to collect my race number. God I forgot how far it was and ended up walk/running for 3 miles before I even started in a big fleece and trousers! Not used to the heat but running in the park was absolutely a total treat. Fabulous. I did my best at 2:10 I think . Forgot to look at my watch. Deer jumping out at mile 9 nearly scared the bejaysus out of me. Love the Tshirt!
Denise???? How's you girl?
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THAT POOR BLOKE WHO COLLAPSED SURVIVED? THEY WERE DOING HEART MASSAGE AND THE WORKS WHEN i PASSED HIM AT ABOUT 13M. CAN'T GET HIM OUT OF MY HEAD SINCE.The ambulance was just arriving then. Please God he makes it.
