Long Slow Run....
I would love to do a full marathon having managed a couple of half marathons this year ( started jogging in April).
All the plans suggest you do a few shorter runs and a long slow run every week. Also to do up to 18/20/22 miles depending on which you follow. Other guides say not to train more than 3 hours. I will never be able to do a fast marathon as I am starting too late in my life but I would be concerned that If I only run for 3 or 3 and a half hours in training that on the day I am asking my body to go for at least a further hour or two more!. Surely if you take the long runs very easy and burn the fat rather than the sugars it would be better to run close to what you would expect to do on the day???
How long did you marathon virgins run for in your training and did you feel it was enough?
If you stay with shorter long runs ie the 3 hours do you need to do more in the other sessions during the week to make up for it?
Hi Scooby,
I've been using a training schedule from Hal Higdon's website and have found it very useful. Check it out at www.halhigdon.com. You'll find links to programs for all the major race distances, as well as beginner, intermediate and advanced programs for each one. He also explains the rationale behind the training schedule, which I found helpful. As long as you stick to the program, you'll gradually improve and reach the distance you're training for. Let me know how you get on!
