I did my first marathon last year in London. I ran it in 3 hrs 49mins... i trained for 6 months to do this. I havent been running since as i was travelling all summer and havent got back into it yet. Im starting training for Connemara 2009 and was wondering would it be a unrealistic target to try and beat 3hrs 49mins in Connemara? because of its more hilly terrain?

Thanks
Oz

not if you put in enough training.

Hmm, I'd say you'd need to add 20 minutes or so to arrive at a realistic Conn time. In other words, can you improve by 20 mins, or 10%? A Good challenge!

Hi Ozzy,
In my experience you lose 10 minutes from a completely flat marathon. I speak about times around 3hours, so maybe would be enought to do a proportion with your 3h49'.
I ran 3 times Connemara and I was always 7minutes slower than in Belfast that is a good 4 minutes slower than a superflat fast marathon.

I guess you can think about 15' extra minutes to do an equivalent marathon that your 3h49' in London. Just add or remove if you have or not have attitude to hills.

Just one remark, if you end up a bit too tired in the last hill you can lose a huge amount of time, so that calculation works if you manage to run all the way without hitting the wall. The last hill is a +80meters in one shot, and if you arrive there already cooked, you would lose extra minutes.

anyway nice choice, Connemara is just a great marathon.
