Possibly Mick Rice - he's into that type of uber-madness that I can only aspire to.

Was really glad you said hello after the race Peter. Sorry I wasn't in better shape to have a chat but as you might have guessed I was a bit rough at the time. I also crawled home but I suppose it's all a learning process :-) As I said at the time - Next time you have a mad, crazy idea for a long run.....give me a shout!

Well, there is a 100Km race on in the Phoenix park this saturday, and there is the Wicklow trail race (50Km) on the following saturday. There are 3 ultras on in Ireland this year, and they are on consecutive weekends. Mad!

And then you have the London Marathon straight after that. Not an ultra I know but most ultrarunners are marathon runners too or so I'd guess. I'd love to run more ultras. I'd even say that they're my main interest but it's unrealistic to try to run a forty and sixty mile race with seven days rest. You might get around but you won't be able to perform at your best.

Are you running in Dublin Eoin? If so, good luck and keep us up to date on how you get on.

Yes, I'll be running the 100Km, and if I'm able to I'll have a crack at the 50Km on the following week. Thats Why I wasn't running in Connemara this year. It a rare thing for the 100Km to line up at such a good time of the year for me, and equally rare for it to be in Ireland.

The 50Km is well worth running. It starts at Johnny Fox's pub and heads out along the Wicklow Way and back. Entry on the day shouldn't be any problem. Another scenic race. 2 years ago I managed to run it 6 days after running the Connemara Marathon, so that sort of madness can be done!

Hi Eoin,

do you have the web addresses for the other 2 ultras? I thought Connemara was the only ultra in Ireland. Never even heard of the Phoenix Park 100k. I assume it's a multi lap race.

Cheers,

Aidan.

Hi Aidan,

there are no race web sites for either race.

The 100km is on this Saturday, and entries are closed as far as I know. It is the Anglo-Celtic plate, which is an annual race over 100km between England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In so far as possible they try and rotate the race location between each country. This years race is particularly early. Its normally June/July-ish. Its only been in Dublin once before. Its not restricted to international team racers (or indeed to people from those countries). Any qualified athlete can race (should have some ultra experience, or a reasonable marathon history, just to prove you're not going to kill yourself). Google for the 100km anglo celtic plate if you want to find information.
This year its about 37 laps of a 1.7ish mile lap.

The wicklow trail race is normally on the first saturday in April, but is on the 2nd saturday this year because of the 100km The race director is organising the 100km this year, so as a result Crusaders athletic club have decided to take up the mantle of organising this race. It runs from Johnny fox's pub out along the wicklow way to the pier gates near lough Tay, and back. There is also a 25km race, which is the return leg of the 50km. You can pre-enter, or enter on the day. Pre-entry guarantees you a race mug! They are nice races. Very scenic. Trail as opposed to road races. This race has been running for many years (longer than Connemara).

Hi Eoin,

many thanks for the info. Shame the Wicklow Trail race is so close to Connemara. I've walked big chunks of the Wicklow way and just love it out there.

My legs might just let me do the 25k, not sure my wife will though... she's a running widow at the weekends.

Slainte,

Aidan
